
Agriculture and Forestry Day at the Legislature is Tuesday, Feb. 9

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Agriculture and Forestry Day at the West Virginia State Legislature will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Representatives from state and federal agencies, as well as those from West Virginia’s forestry and agriculture industries will set up displays throughout the Capitol. The Division of Forestry will celebrate the agency’s centennial with a special display and a 7-foot-tall Smokey Bear statue.
Tuesday’s Agriculture and Forestry Day at the Legislature is the opening day of the 25th Annual A.B. Brooks Memorial Forestry Symposium, which runs through Wednesday, Feb. 10. The annual legislative reception, co-sponsored by the West Virginia Farm Bureau, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Wednesday’s events include a breakfast program featuring Sen. Walt Helmick (D-Pocahontas) as the main speaker. West Virginia Forestry Association (WVFA) President Bob Radspinner will deliver opening remarks at 9 a.m. Following his remarks will be presentations by Secretary of Commerce Kelley Goes and Director/State Forester Randy Dye, a panel discussion on invasive species and a presentation on the West Virginia Forest Assessment. Speaker of the House Rick Thompson will be the luncheon speaker.
The Symposium was created in 1986 in honor of Alonzo Beecher Brooks, West Virginia’s first forester.
