Division of Forestry Announces 2008 Loggers of Excellence

2/3/2009

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the second year in a row, the West Virginia Division of Forestry is recognizing the most conscientious professional loggers in the state.  The “Logger of Excellence” program acknowledges 128 professional loggers who have completed a year’s work in full compliance with the West Virginia Logging Sediment Control Act (LSCA).

“West Virginia’s logging sediment laws are among the toughest in the nation,” said Director/State Forester Randy Dye.  “Being named a Logger of Excellence means that these professional loggers have unblemished records and have protected the state’s water resources by working above and beyond the level needed to be in compliance with the LSCA.”

Each eligible logger will receive a certificate, window decal and bumper sticker identifying him or her as a Logger of Excellence.  The program is based on a calendar year’s work, and the 2008 award recipients who wish to attend will be recognized at the A. B. Brooks Forestry Symposium in Charleston in March 2009.

Jeremy McGill, assistant state forester of water quality, says the program is popular among loggers across the state.  “Last year’s recipients are proud of the honor of being named a Logger of Excellence,” McGill said.  “I’ve personally seen the program’s stickers on trucks and equipment across West Virginia.  It’s a great way to recognize our state’s professional loggers for doing an outstanding job.”
