March 31 is Deadline to Weigh and Certify Ginseng Roots
3/27/2008
CHARLESTON,
W.Va. -- Officials at the Division of Forestry remind all ginseng dealers and diggers that March 31 is the deadline to have the root weighed and certified.
From April 1 through August 31, it is illegal to possess green or dry roots that have not been certified or do not have certified weight receipts attached.
If diggers fail to meet this deadline and do not have their ginseng weighed or they fail to obtain a weight receipt, they cannot legally sell their ginseng and could risk being fined or even jailed.
Diggers who need to have ginseng roots weight-receipted can make an appointment to do so at one of the 13 weigh stations maintained by the Division of Forestry. For a list of weigh stations, call Robin Black at 304-558-2788 or e-mail her at Robin.S.Black@wv.gov.
