CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin is encouraging all West Virginians to support the U.S. relief efforts under way in Haiti.
Individuals and communities across the country are looking for ways to contribute to the recovery of this devastating natural disaster. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, money may be the best way to provide immediate support that also will help sustain victims and relief workers over the long term.
Manchin said, “West Virginians are great humanitarians. We take care of each other in times of need, and I know that we, as West Virginians and Americans, will step up to help the victims of this terrible disaster.”
The governor asked that West Virginians take extra caution to ensure that donations are made through reputable and recognized sources.
Donations can be made online through the American Red Cross at www.american.redcross.org, or through the Center for International Disaster Information at www.cidi.org. Additional information can also be found at the United States Agency for International Development web site, www.usaid.gov, as well as the White House web site, www.whitehouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake.
Manchin and the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security continue to review other ways that West Virginians may be able to assist in crisis recovery.
