FEMA Approves Additional Counties For Public Assistance

6/2/2009  CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin today received word from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that the agency has approved the addition of six more West Virginia counties to its May 15, 2009, major disaster declaration in response to flooding that occurred in early May.

Calhoun, Gilmer, Lewis, Roane, Upshur and Wirt counties today were added to the original declaration that included Mingo and Wyoming counties. Including the additions of McDowell, Mercer and Raleigh counties on May 27, a total of 11 counties are contained within this declaration.

The counties added to the declaration today suffered roadway and infrastructure damage from rainstorms the week of May 3, days before extensive mudslides and flooding struck southern West Virginia, particularly communities in Mingo and Wyoming counties. They will be eligible for federal public assistance grants.

The public assistance grants provide assistance to state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities.
