Due to the winter storm, Gov. Joe Manchin has canceled the annual Christmas party scheduled to take place tonight, Dec. 19, at the Governor's Mansion.
The governor earlier today declared a State of Emergency and authorized the use of the National Guard to assist with snow removal and emergency assistance and operations.
Manchin said the state is doing everything possible to assist stranded motorists, clear roadways and to help utility crews restore power; however, snow continues to accumulate as the storm moves north through the state. The National Guard and the emergency provisions that come with the declaration provide more resources to help deal with the storm's effects.
“State and local emergency management officials are joining highway crews and assisting as best as possible where needed,” Manchin said. “We continue to monitor the storm and our road crews are working around the clock to help emergency crews and first responders get where they need to be.
"I urge all residents to avoid unnecessary travel. This is a major storm and they should not add to the danger by driving if they don't absolutely have to be outside."
