CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin and First Lady Gayle Manchin today announced that they will host a public memorial service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in honor of the 29 miners who were lost and the two wounded during the mine disaster at the Upper Big Branch Mine-South. The service will take place at the Beckley Raleigh Co. Convention Center, 200 Armory Drive, Beckley.
“This memorial service will truly allow us to pay our respects to our lost miners and their families,” Gov. Joe Manchin said. “Gayle and I believe that it is important to bring the entire community together to show the families our support and let them know that their loved ones will not be forgotten.”
The event will include various musical performances, prayers and tributes, remarks from clergy, the governor and other dignitaries.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Seats are on a first-come, first serve basis.
