Governor, Senator Rockefeller and Veterans Officials Today Announce West Virginia Veterans Cemetery
2/18/2010
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin today joined U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, West Virginia Division of Veterans Affairs director Keith Gwinn, Dow Chemical representatives, and local Veterans Affairs officials to announce a land transfer agreement between Dow and the state for a new Veterans cemetery.
“Our veterans and their families have put everything on the line for our security and freedom, and I am pleased that this agreement was made possible. This will allow us to properly honor those heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice,” said the governor.
The Donation agreement between Dow Chemical and the state has been signed and the deed is expected to be transferred within two to three weeks.
The West Virginia Division of Veterans Affairs, at the direction of the West Virginia Veterans Council, prepared a feasibility study for the Governor’s approval in December 2007. The West Virginia Legislature enacted legislation in 2008 to allow lottery proceeds to provide operation funding for the cemetery.
