CHARLESTON, W.Va.-Gov. Joe Manchin today appointed Craig A. Griffith to serve as tax commissioner for the West Virginia State Tax Department.
Griffith was appointed as acting tax commissioner in March of this year following the resignation of former tax commissioner Christopher Morris. Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Griffith served for three years as deputy tax commissioner and chief of staff for the department. While in this role, he was involved with various organizations and committees including the Multistate Tax Commission, the West Virginia Tax Modernization Project, and the Film Credit Development Committee.
“Craig has been instrumental in helping the State Tax Department become a national leader on taxation issues,” said Manchin. “The Federation of Tax Administrators recently recognized the department for its management abilities as it has transformed into a more efficient and modern tax agency. I know Craig will continue this effort for the taxpayers of West Virginia.”
Commissioner Griffith graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University’s College of Business & Economics in 1997 and from the West Virginia University College of Law in 2000. Prior to joining the Tax Department, Griffith was employed as a tax consultant for one of the four largest international accounting firms, and as an attorney for a West Virginia-based regional law firm. His practice focused on state and local tax matters, municipal bond law and general commercial law.
A native of Ripley, W.Va., Griffith resides in Charleston with his wife Kelly and daughters Julia and Sydney.
The State Tax Department, an agency under the West Virginia Department of Revenue, administers West Virginia’s tax laws and collects revenue due the state.
