CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin today requested a federal disaster declaration to assist four counties that were affected by the severe storms, flooding, mudslides and landslides on June 12. This severe weather damaged both private and public property, including homes, businesses, vehicles, access bridges, roads and churches. More than 145 homes are destroyed or have suffered major damage.
“I tour the flood-damaged area last Sunday and my heart completely went out to our fellow residents who have been affected by this terrible weather,” the governor said. “We are working with our congressional delegation to ensure a quick response and I thank them for their support and efforts.”
The counties included in the official request are: Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming. The initial damage estimates are $5 million. However, as more information is gathered in the coming days, the governor could request additional counties be added to the federal disaster declaration.
