CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin today encouraged all West Virginians to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress in honor of America’s fallen heroes. The governor is joining other governors across this nation and asking that at 3 p.m. Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 citizens pause, reflect and observe this Moment of Remembrance and those we have lost.
This Moment of reflection is not meant to replace traditional Memorial Day festivities, but instead is a simple act of respect to highlight what Memorial Day truly means.
“West Virginians have always answered our nation call to duty, and Memorial Day is truly a special day for us to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country,” Gov. Joe Manchin said. “It is important that our children and grandchildren understand the importance of Memorial Day. I encourage all West Virginians to participate in this Moment of Remembrance and give thanks to those who have fought for the principles that we hold dear – liberty, freedom and equality.”
The importance of the Moment is underscored by a Gallup poll which revealed that only 28 percent of Americans know the meaning of this noble holiday.
The governor today officially signed a proclamation declaring 3 p.m. Monday, May 25 as the Moment of Remembrance in the Mountain State.
In addition to honor America’s fallen, the governor has ordered all state flags displayed at state facilities to be flown at half-staff on Monday.
