Governor Manchin Visits Additional Flooded Areas

5/11/2008

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin earlier today toured additional flooded communities in Mingo and Wyoming counties. Six counties (Boone, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh and Wyoming) remain on the governor’s State of Emergency declaration.
The governor said damage assessments continue and state emergency management officials are working on the federal disaster declaration, which is expected to include at least Mingo, Wyoming and McDowell counties, though the final determination has not yet been made.
Gov. Manchin today also spoke with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. “Sec. Napolitano is aware of the damage and has said she is prepared to offer her agency’s assistance. I have asked her to expedite our requests for federal assistance.”
Manchin said he wants southern West Virginians affected by this flooding to know that they are not alone in this recovery effort. “Any time your home is uprooted as it has been for so many of our citizens with this flooding, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. We are here to help and they’re not by themselves.”
Preliminary estimates suggest that as many as 2,500 homes have sustained major damage, mainly in Mingo and Wyoming counties. Businesses and at least three schools also were hit hard, according to the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. In addition to clearing roadways and debris, priorities remain to assesdamage and getting water and sewer utilities back online.
Members of the West Virginia National Guard, the West Virginia Conservation Agency, the West Virginia Division of Highways and state and local emergency management teams are on site and are coordinating their efforts. Manchin said local businesses and citizens are working hard in the clean up and are offering assistance and heavy equipment where possible.
The governor urges citizens to contact their local county emergency services offices to report flood and storm damages to their homes and businesses.
