3/23/2010
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin has ordered all state flags displayed at state facilities lowered to half-staff the entire day of Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in commemoration of the distinguished life and service of Glasgow Volunteer Fireman Donald “Donnie” Adkins III.
Adkins, 32, of Cedar Grove, W.Va., died while he and fellow firefighters rescued 15 people from flood waters on March 13, in Beaver, W.Va.
Adkins was a dedicated member of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department since 2008, and a previous member of the Rand Volunteer Fire Department.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Donnie’s family and friends at this difficult time. Donnie paid the ultimate sacrifice while working to help save others. Our first responders put a great deal on the line and they do their jobs with immeasurable bravery. I know that West Virginia’s entire first responder community mourns the tragic loss of Donnie and will continue to keep his memory alive,” said the governor.
