CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin has ordered all state flags displayed at state facilities lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, in commemoration of the distinguished life and service of Charleston Police Patrolman Jerry Alan Jones.
Jones, 27, was fatally wounded on Sept. 13 while in the line of duty. He had been an officer for three years with the Charleston Police Department, after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Jones family and friends," the governor said. "Patrolman Jones’s death is a great loss not only to the city of Charleston, but to the entire state."
His funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Charleston. Burial will be at the Rob Jones Cemetery in Coopers Creek. Hafer Funeral Home of Elkview is in charge of the arrangements.
