Governor Orders U.S. And State Flags Lowered In Memory Of West Virginia Soldier

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin has ordered all U.S. and state flags displayed at state facilities lowered to half-staff the entire day of Monday, Nov. 16, in commemoration of the distinguished life and service of Army Specialist Julian Lee Guthrie Berisford.

Berisford, 25, of Benwood, W.Va., passed away on Nov. 4, 2009, of injuries sustained when his unit came under attack while on a battle damage assessment patrol in Bermal District, Paktika Province, Afghanistan.  Spc. Berisford was a member of C Company, 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Prior to his death, Berisford had been awarded numerous medals and commendations for his military service. Spc. Berisford will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal.

Service with full military honors will be held in Moundsville, W.Va.
