CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin today ordered all United States and state flags displayed at state facilities lowered to half-staff Wednesday, October 8, in commemoration of the distinguished life and service of United States Army Sgt. First Class Jamie Scott Nicholas.
Nicholas, 32, was killed in action on Monday, September 29, 2008, from injuries sustained while on combat operations in Afghanistan. Nicholas was assigned to the U.S. Army B Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Airborne Group based in Fort Bragg, N.C.
Nicholas was a 1994 graduate of Clay County High School. Sgt. First Class Nicholas was a dedicated career soldier, and was serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Prior to his death, Nicholas had been awarded several medals and commendations for his military service. Sgt. First Class Nicholas will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal and NATO Medal.
His funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday at Clay County High School. Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home (Wallback, W.Va.) is in charge of funeral arrangements. Nicholas will be buried in Clay
