CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Lewis as the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) cabinet secretary. Lewis will replace Patsy Hardy as DHHR secretary in early December.
Lewis has spent more than 30 years as a professional in the medical field and is the former associate vice president for West Virginia University (WVU) Health Sciences, Charleston Division. As associate vice president of WVU Health Sciences, Dr. Lewis oversaw health education programs, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy and dentistry.
Dr. Lewis most recently served in various positions while at East Carolina University including a clinical faculty role as professor in family medicine and vice chancellor for Health Sciences.
“I am pleased that Michael has accepted this position to lead our state’s DHHR. He brings a wealth of knowledge to health care services in West Virginia and I am delighted that he is coming back home to help move this vital agency forward,” said Gov. Tomblin.
Lewis said he is eager to serve as the cabinet secretary for the state’s Department of Health and Human Resources. “Health care has been my passion for more than 30 years and I look forward to working diligently to help improve health care in West Virginia. I want to thank Governor Tomblin for this opportunity,” said Lewis.
Raleigh County native Lewis is the past vice chancellor for Health Sciences for the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, former member of the Board of Risk and Insurance Management (BRIM) and a former member the West Virginia University Hospitals/United Health System board of directors.
Dr. Lewis earned a medical degree from West Virginia University’s School of Medicine, a doctorate and master’s degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lewis has conducted research for the West Virginia Area Health Education Centers, the National Institute on Aging and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Lewis also has more than 20 articles and abstracts in publication.
