Governor Tomblin Issues Statement Regarding Spruce Number One Mine
1/13/2011
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Earlier today the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) withdrew the previously issued clean water permit for the Mingo Logan Spruce Number One Surface Mine. The permit was issued under the Clean Water Act in 2007 after an extensive 10-year review in which the EPA participated.
“This news is devastating to the Southern Coal Fields and our entire state. The Spruce Number One permit was issued years ago after undergoing a comprehensive permitting process. It is hard to understand how the EPA at this late hour could take such a drastic action. We will continue with all efforts to get this decision reversed. Businesses need stability to succeed. I believe we can mine coal in an environmentally safe manner and I will continue to fight this decision,” Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said.
