CHARLESTON, WV – Gov. Joe Manchin today announced his intention to appoint Ray Lane, Managing Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), to the West Virginia University Board of Governors. The appointment will be for four years and will become effective July 1.
“Ray Lane is an immensely respected leader and innovator,” said Gov. Manchin. “His knowledge and skills reach well beyond his business and technology successes to encompass organizational development, team building and higher education advancement. He is already an established advocate for West Virginia University, and I am so pleased that he has agreed to now be a valuable member of its Board of Governors.”
Mr. Lane received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and an honorary Ph.D. in science from WVU. He is also a member of the West Virginia University Academy of Distinguished Graduates. Before joining KPCB, Lane was President and Chief Operating Officer of Oracle Corporation, the second-largest software company in the world and the leading enterprise software and services company. Prior to that, he was a senior partner with Booz-Allen & Hamilton, where he pioneered and led the Information Systems Group, a worldwide consulting practice targeted at helping senior management achieve better results from information technology. He was also a division vice president with Electronic Data Systems Corp (EDS) and spent 10 years with IBM.
“As a resident of California and a native of Pittsburgh, it is clear to me that WVU is a critical contributor to the economic and competitive growth of the Ohio Valley region, not just the state of West Virginia,” Lane said. “As I’ve watched Stanford and the University of California help construct a powerful economy in Silicon Valley, I am happy to be personally involved helping WVU do the same for the state, region and the nation.”
Mr. Lane currently serves on the board of trustees of Carnegie Mellon University, and has been an active campaigner and planner for Carnegie Mellon's establishment of a Silicon Valley campus, and is the co-creator of a High Dependability Computing Consortium with Carnegie Mellon and NASA. He serves as Vice Chairman of Special Olympics International and has served on the International Board of Special Olympics for several years.
