CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The first Governor’s Summit on Young Talent will convene this Wednesday, May 5 at the Governor’s Mansion, located on the State Capitol Complex. More than 100 young West Virginians from various backgrounds and occupations are scheduled to participate.
“It is important to give young people an opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions on how to take our state to the next level,” Gov. Joe Manchin said. “A few of years ago, I created the Governor’s Council of Young Professionals to give young people a voice in state government as we chart our state’s future. This summit is a direct result from those council meetings.”
The goals of the summit are focused on:
• Getting young professionals’ views on today’s top issues, such as: health care, education, economic development and energy;
• Connecting our state’s young people with top state government officials and business and labor leaders;
• Encouraging young talent to serve in state government, whether through employment or on a board or commission;
• Having an open conversation about the future of our state.
The governor understands the importance of connecting with young leaders and is interested in hearing their ideas and suggestions on how to make our state more competitive and more appealing to younger generations.
In his 2010 State of the State address, Gov. Joe Manchin recognized that one long-standing challenge that West Virginia has faced is retaining and attracting young and talented people. During his address, the governor announced this summit and said, “By harnessing the talent already inside our borders, we have a greater chance to bring back home those who yearn to live, work and play in our beautiful state.”
