Charleston, W.Va. – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced today that he has awarded $160,909.00 to help victims of sexual assault. He stated the award will identify, provide and expand direct services to sexual assault victims in the State.
Sadly, it’s estimated one out of every nine adult women or 85-thousand women in WV have been a victim of a sexual assault. But only about one third of the incidents are ever reported. The funds will be used to pay for counseling for both adults and children who’ve suffered a sexual assault. The money will also pay for advocacy support. An advocate is someone who will walk the victim through the court process and may provide transportation to court or a doctor. The advocate can also help sexual assault victims find employment and housing as well as assist them in getting healthcare and an education.
The Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) grant funds have been awarded to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services. The sub grantee will provide monitoring and technical assistance to the nine (9) Sexual Assault Programs in the State. The SASP funds are awarded from the Office on Violence Against Women, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. These funds are administered by the Division of Justice and Community Services of the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.
