CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Gov. Joe Manchin this afternoon received word that President George Bush has approved federal disaster assistance for a majority of the counties requested by the governor last week. The federal disaster declaration follows severe weather that caused significant damage in north central West Virginia from June 3 through June 7.
The approval includes the types of assistance and counties, below:
INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE (Assistance to individuals and households): Barbour, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Marion, Taylor, and Tyler counties.
PUBLIC ASSISTANCE (Assistance to State and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities): Barbour, Clay, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Marion and Taylor counties.
Additional county designations for public and individual assistance may be made at a later date after further evaluation.
HAZARD MITIGATION GRANT PROGRAM (Assistance to State and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for actions taken to prevent or reduce long term risk to life and property from natural hazards): All counties in the State of West Virginia are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
