Gov. Joe Manchin today released the following statement after learning that the Legislature’s Select Committee on Infrastructure held a meeting with state officials, at the request of the committee, on Monday to suggest possible new revenue sources for the State Road Fund:
“It is my understanding that the Legislature’s Select Committee on Infrastructure held a meeting yesterday with state officials to suggest possible new revenue sources to support the State Road Fund budget. After reviewing the proposed suggestions, I want to be clear that these are suggestions that I strongly oppose and do not in any way support as a means to generate revenue for the state road fund.
“I absolutely will not introduce any legislation, now or in the future, that relates to proposing new taxes.
“It is against my administration’s philosophy to raise taxes - we have managed state responsibly – in fact, we’ve cut the food tax in half, lowered taxes on businesses, reduced income taxes and operated in a fiscally responsible manner which has carried us through the recent economic downturn. We can find ways to support the highway fund without implementing new taxes.”
