Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today released the following statement in anticipation of heavy winter storm heading to the state:
Because of the approaching heavy wet snow coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, today Governor Tomblin expressed his appreciation to the West Virginia Department of Highways, the Department of Homeland Security and Appalachian Power and for their foresight in preparation of the storm and in doing everything possible to keep West Virginians safe.
“This has been a challenging winter weather season for the entire state. While it is beautiful to look at, severe snow conditions can be difficult for citizens of all ages,” said Governor Tomblin. “I want to commend our government offices and AEP for their advanced efforts to ensure that our citizens are as prepared as possible particularly as the major portion of this storm approaches.”
If citizens must drive, the Department of Highways reminds everyone to slow down and watch out for other drivers on the road. DOH crews are ready and positioned to plow and treat roads around the clocks until this winter event is over. The Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the storm and is ready to take action in case a state of emergency is declared. DHS would like citizens to stay home if at all possible. Appalachian Power has already called in additional workers to deal with any electric outages that might occur especially in areas anticipating the heaviest snow fall.
“This weather will affect the entire state but it will hit hardest in the Blue Ridge Mountain area as well as the southern areas of state including Beckley and Bluefield. If you don’t have to travel it is best to stay home. If you must drive, please do so cautiously so you arrive safely,” said Gov. Tomblin.
