Gov. Joe Manchin today released the following statement about the anticipated long-term idling of the Severstal Wheeling facility:
“Today’s news is heartbreaking for the Severstal workers and their families and unfortunately, this announcement is another direct result of the global economic downturn that we are currently experiencing.
“Our state’s WORKFORCE WV office is prepared to assist these families through this difficult process and answer their questions – everything from what re-training options that they may qualify for to what assistance is available.
“Like I have said before, this economy is very challenging, but West Virginians are a strong people and we will get through this. Over the past few years, we have gotten our state’s financial house is order, so West Virginia is well-positioned to benefit when the world market bounces back.
“Until then, we must continue to fight to keep every job, and rest assured that I will do all I can to help these workers get back to work as soon as possible, while also looking for new ways to create economic development opportunities for our state.”
