Statement from the Governor Regarding Education Reforms and the Upcoming Special Session
6/2/2010
“Today, I spoke with Del. Mary Poling and Sen. Robert Plymale, who are the chairs of the education working group, and they asked for more time to work through the education bills. I applaud this group because the members have acted diligently on the education measures, reaching agreement on more than 50 percent of the legislation. This is an important movement that we need in order to bring some necessary changes to our education system. They believe that by working during the June interims their work on all of the bills can be completed by June 11.
“After speaking with the President and the Speaker, we have decided that more time is warranted in order to continue this meaningful dialogue and to gain consensus on other measures.
“Once the committee has completed their work, we will release all of the legislation to the legislators and the public. Additionally, in the interest of giving everyone plenty of time to analyze the legislation and avoid additional expense, I will delay calling the special session until July 19, when the legislators will already be in town for the July interims. I am hopeful this time frame will set the foundation for a very quick and straight-forward session.”
