Gov. Joe Manchin today released the following statement about the West Virginia State Senate and West Virginia House of Delegates passing legislation requiring children to be in school 180 days a year:
“This bill puts children first. I am truly appreciative of the Senate and House members’ stamp of approval for 180 days of classroom instruction and for pushing this important piece of legislation to the forefront.
“I am proud that this bill was the first bill to pass both houses this regular session, highlighting the importance of our children being able to compete globally in the 21st century.
“This issue was debated last year and we were at an impasse. However, today it has come full circle with the passage.
“Our teachers and school service personnel work hard, and this bill will help them to do what they do best – teach and mentor.
“This is a great start to help ensure that our children and grandchildren grow to be successful, productive adults.”
