 Governor Orders U.S. and State Flags to be Lowered

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today issued a proclamation ordering all U.S. and State flags displayed at State facilities be lowered to half-staff immediately in commemoration of the distinguished life and service of the Honorable Judge M. Blane Michael. Flags will remain displayed at half-staff through sunset on Mar. 29, 2011.

Blane Michael began his long and illustrious legal career in New York. There, he was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, followed by becoming Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of West Virginia. He later returned to private practice in Petersburg, West Virginia for two years before serving as law clerk to the Honorable Judge Robert Maxwell in the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.

Blane Michael served as Counsel to West Virginia Governor John D. Rockefeller IV before returning again to private practice in Charleston, West Virginia. It was at this time he was appointed by President William Jefferson Clinton to serve as Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit where he served until his death. Judge Michael also served as a political confidant to Senators John D. Rockefeller IV and Robert C. Byrd, managing successful campaigns for each.

"Judge Blane Michael was an immensely respected public servant and a devoted husband and father," said Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. "The Judge was not only admired for his great intellect, but he also had a great sense of humor that allowed him to connect with so many people. His contributions and dedication to West Virginia enriched our state. He will be missed by all."

Judge Blane Michael died on Mar. 25, 2011. He is survived by his wife of over forty years, Mary Anne Eckert and their daughter, Cora Einhorn.
