West Virginia’s First Ovarian Cancer Awareness “Super Luncheon” to be Sept. 1

8/11/2009
CHARLESTON, W.Va.  – Governors and First Spouses across the nation will participate in “Super Luncheons” during the month of September in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

West Virginia will kick off its first “Super Luncheon,” hosted by First Lady Gayle Manchin and The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at noon, at the Governor’s Mansion.

Attending the luncheon will be OCRF ambassador Mary Schiano, Dr. Michael Schiano and various community leaders from across the state. Dr. Henry Lynch is scheduled to speak regarding the prevalence and incidence of ovarian cancer, and will also discuss his research findings related to the disease.

The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund was founded in 1994 and is the leading independent organization in the United States funding research that will help find better methods of early detection, and ultimately, a cure for the disease.  Since 1998, OCRF has given $33 million to 142 researchers, scientist and doctors who represent institutions and universities across the United States.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecological cancers in the United States with more than 22,000 women diagnose annually and 15,000 losing their lives to the disease.

A list of participating states can be found at www.superluncheon.org and information about speakers and dates will be updated daily.  For more information about the first Super Luncheon or OCRF, please contact Sabrina Schulz at sschulz@ocrf.org.
