CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Joe Manchin today announced that West Virginia state agencies will join at least 27 other states in a pledge to switch off unnecessary lights for one hour on March 27, as part of Earth Hour 2010.
Gov. Manchin said, “Participation in Earth Hour shows that West Virginians are doing their part to encourage energy conservation. It illustrates our concern and willingness to work together to reduce our carbon footprint and is a reminder that the little things we do every day can actually make a difference. I encourage everyone to take notice of the unnecessary energy they use every day, and do their part to minimize waste.
“We all can make a difference just by switching off our lights.”
Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. At this time the governor and first lady will switch off non-essential lights at the Governor’s Mansion. The governor has asked all cabinet secretaries and department heads to do the same.
The governor said he encourages all West Virginians to turn off non-essential lights at their homes during the designated time and to continue to conserve energy by curbing unnecessary use of lights throughout the year.
