Kanawha County Woman Pleads Guilty To Insurance Fraud

1/8/2008

CHARLESTON, WV -- West Virginia Insurance Commissioner, Jane L. Cline, announced today along with Inspector General, Gary L. Griffith, that a Kanawha County woman, Starlit M. Toban, age 28, of St. Albans, WV, plead guilty to a reduced charge of one misdemeanor count of "filing a false claim with an insurance company".  Ms. Toban reported a "hit and run" on December 22, 2005 to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, at that time she was advised by the Deputy that he believed the damage to her car was the result of the vehicle running into a pole.  She subsequently filed a claim with her insurance company, GEICO Indemnity Insurance Company. Ms. Toban was sentenced to two years probation upon the entry of her guilty plea before the Kanawha County Judge Charles E. King, Jr.

Commissioner Cline stated, "This type of fraud continues to raise the cost of auto insurance rates for all citizens in the state and cannot be tolerated.  We are committed to aggressively investigate and prosecute any and all types of insurance fraud through out the State of West Virginia."
