Wild Land Firefighter Training Scheduled For Sept. 14-18 “Fire School” Prepares Personnel For Upcoming Forest Fire Season
8/25/2009
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Assistant State Forester Ben Webster announced today that the Division of Forestry (DOF) will host its biennial “fire school” from Sept. 14 – 18, at Jackson’s Mill in Lewis County. The weeklong training course will teach new agency employees and personnel from the Division of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation section and the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers about wild land firefighting techniques. More than 30 students will take courses that include wild land fire behavior, fire line safety, firefighting tools, and causes and origins of wildfires.
Webster said that approximately eight instructors will be on-site throughout the week to teach various courses and answer questions the students might have about real-life fire situations.
Two hands-on sessions, a mock wildfire suppression exercise and a wildfire simulation activity, will provide students with opportunities to administer techniques they’ve learned throughout the week.
Webster said, “Our students will have to apply what they’ve learned at fire school rather quickly because the fall forest fire season starts Oct. 1.”
