Blacksmithing Demonstration Of Pre-Civil War Era Curtain Rods At Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park April 26

4/25/2008  Gunsmith and blacksmith Clarence Craigo and his wife, Dora, will be at the historic Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park and the site of the Patterson House Museum Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., demonstrating the art of blacksmithing circa 1790-1840.  In period attire of the 1840s, the Craigos will welcome visitors to observe blacksmithing as Clarence creates curtain rods for the museum while sharing history with guests. A flintlock demonstration is scheduled at 1p.m.  Craigo will be on the lawn area at the museum.

According to Superintendent Sam Cowell, part of the demonstration is the creation of period-correct curtain rods and hangers for the museum.  “The Craigos are reenactors, interpreters of the late 1790s through the Civil War period, and advocates of preservation, and we are pleased to have their help us in creating hand forged curtain rods for the museum at Carnifex.  What a great way to preserve and continue to serve history.”

Craigo, a Boone County native, is employed by the Division of Culture and History and works at the Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park. He will demonstrate the art of forge welding curtains rods by the hands of a blacksmith, flintlock demonstrations and provide conversation during this demonstration at Carnifex Ferry.  The event is open to the public and there is no charge. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a great spring day.

Carnifex Ferry Battlefield is in Nicholas County. From Rt. 19, south of Summersville, take Rt. 129 west for approximately 5 miles to a left turn on Carnifex Ferry Road.  It is only one mile from there to the Patterson Museum.  Carnifex Ferry Battlefield is an official Civil War Discovery Trail site.
