Elk Creek Wildlife Management Area To Be Dedicated April 6 At Chief Logan Lodge, Hotel And Conference Center

4/3/2008

The Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has established a new Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Logan and Mingo counties, according to Frank Jezioro, Director of the WVDNR.  "The Elk Creek WMA consists of 6,004 acres owned by Heartwood Forestland Fund II, L.P. and recently leased to the State of West Virginia for public hunting, fishing and trapping," said Jezioro.

A special dedication of the Elk Creek WMA is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2008, at 2 p.m.  The ceremony will be held at Chief Logan Lodge, Hotel and Conference Center, located one mile off US 119 between Logan and Chapmanville

"The acquisition of more public lands in the Logan and Mingo areas continues to be a high priority for our agency because of the large number of hunters and anglers in that area of the state," said Jezioro.  "Heartwood Forestland Fund II is to be commended for developing this lease agreement which will assure that the property will be enjoyed by current and future generations of hunters, anglers and trappers."

The Elk Creek WMA lies in the southeastern corner of Logan County and the northeastern portion of Mingo County.  The WMA consists of two separate parcels that total 6,004 acres. Access to the Elk Creek WMA is by way of WV Route 10 and WV Route 80, east of Wylo. The WMA is primarily forested and will provide hunting opportunities for deer, wild turkey, squirrel and other game species.

Individuals interested in obtaining additional information about the Elk Creek WMA may contact the WVDNR District 5 Office at (304) 675-0871.
