North Bend State Park in Ritchie County sets the pace for Valentine’s and President’s Day weekend packages, activities and dinners Feb. 12 – 15. In addition to Valentine’s Day on Sunday, Monday is President’s Day and a recognized federal and state holiday.
“We have a sweetheart weekend package with lodging, dinner and dance, and then there’s Valentine’s Day on Sunday with a special menu for a evening out,” says Kathy Metz, Asst. Supt “We get a lot of calls looking for a long weekend getaway, some wanting a sweetheart’s dance and others looking for just a nice evening out and meal” says Metz.
From North Bend to Pipestem and all around the state, there is a variety of ways to celebrate Valentine’s Weekend. Here’s what you’ll find at West Virginia’s state parks:

Sweetheart Weekend Package
North Bend State Park
Check in by 4 p.m. on Friday and take a Tunnel (of Love) Hike on the North Bend Rail Trail. At 5:15 p.m., it’s time for dinner on your own and to enjoy love songs by Joann Peterson at 7:30 p.m. A Make-Your-Own Ice Cream Sundae party is part of Friday food and fun. Enjoy Saturday breakfast at North Bend Dining Room and then, around 10:30 a.m., there are local area tours planned; get details on shuttle or car pooling available by calling the park. Saturday afternoon activities include crafts and bingo. The evening Sweetheart Buffet features hand-carved prime rib, chef-carved roast turkey and Chef Ingel’s Fabulous Dessert Bar. The Sweetheart Dance features live music by “Stepping Stones.”
Price for two nights lodging, Feb. 12 and 13 at North Bend Lodge, entertainment Friday evening, Saturday breakfast and Sweetheart Dinner, and the Sweetheart Dance is $290 for two people. Dinner and dance only on Saturday, Feb. 13, is $100 per couple. Call for details or reservations: 304-643-2931.

Valentine’s Day - Surf-and-Turf Dinner-for-Two
North Bend State Park
North Bend Restaurant is featuring a special menu on Valentines’ Sunday. From 5 – 8 p.m. be a Valentine and enjoy Chef Ingel’s entrees and sweetheart desserts. The dinner for two comes with two 8 oz. Black Angus filets mignon and lobster broiled to perfection with a choice of potato, chef’s vegetable, and chef’s special sweetheart desserts, and beverage. The Surf-and-Turf for two is $69.
For Valentine’s night at North Bend, the overnight package add-on is $84 and includes room accommodation, memory rose, sparkling cider and breakfast delivered to your room on the morning of February 15. Cacapon Resort State Park
Journey with your sweetheart to Cacapon Resort State Park in Morgan County to steal away a few special moments relaxing and enjoying the wonderful park surroundings. A Sweetheart package for Saturday night, Feb. 13, includes overnight accommodations at Cacapon Lodge, dinner, breakfast and acoustic guitar entertainment by Mike Clement. Saturday’s dinner menu includes London broil, baked marinated chicken, seasoned tilapia, garden blend wild rice, vegetable medley, soups, salads, and desserts. The cost is $143.23 for two people. Hawks Nest State Park
Slip away to Hawks Nest State Park in Fayette County, perhaps the park that hosts more proposals for marriage, honeymoons and anniversary celebrations than any setting in West Virginia. The 2010 Valentine Weekend Package includes two nights lodging Feb. 12 and 13 at Hawks Nest Lodge, Sweetheart’s Dinner Saturday evening with special entrees and desserts, complimentary bud vase in every room Friday evening upon arrival, and continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Pipestem Resort State Park
Pipestem Resort State Park in Summers County has a Valentine’s Weekend packed with options. “For starters we have a weekend packages that includes lodging, dance and dinner,” says Shirley Martin, events coordinator. Pipestem’s weekend package includes two nights at McKeever Lodge, dinner and dance on Saturday and other activities throughout the weekend. The dance features the band 2nd Wind. The package cost is $279.48 and includes taxes and gratuities. This weekend packages is listed in detail online under “Events” at www.pipestemresort.com .
The Bluestone Dining Room at Pipestem will feature a Sweetheart Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. With carved roast beef and basil chowder and grilled chicken and rice soup, the buffet also includes peppered pork roast, tilapia, salmon and a host of specialty dishes prepared by Chef Erik Stalnaker.
For Valentine’s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, the restaurant will have a surf and turf menu option. Pipestem’s restaurant is most noted for the every Friday seafood buffet and gourmet cuisine at Mt. Creek in the summer months.
Visitors may take advantage of a Sunday or Monday retreat at McKeever Lodge. “Room rates on Valentine’s Day, Sunday the 14th and on President’s Day, Monday the 15th are 50 percent off,” says Dale McLaughlin, Lodge Manager at Pipestem. “We’ll be handing out kisses, the chocolate ones in foil, when guests ask for a Valentine Kiss rate on these two dates. The front desk staff invites lodges guests for Cocoa at Eight (p.m.) on this Sunday and Monday.”

Valentine’s Day Delay
Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls State Park lodge in Tucker County offers to “delay the (Valentine) day” to Monday, Feb. 15, and tempts guests with heart stopping reduction in room rates. Skiing conditions at nearby Canaan Valley on Valentine’s Weekend has Blackwater Falls Lodge bustling with outdoor pursuits, but on President’s Day, February 15, lodge rooms are discounted at 40 percent off regular rates and includes 20 percent off gift shop purchase on Feb. 16 and a discounted breakfast.
Blackwater Falls Restaurant will be featuring prime rib dinner on Valentines Day, Sunday, Feb. 14 from 4 .pm. until closing. The $18.95 dinner promises to be a great evening out. For individuals arriving earlier, a buffet featuring shrimp scampi, roast beef, fried shrimp and more is available at $13.95.
