Fork Creek Wildlife Management Area Closes

7/7/2008  Fork Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA), located near Nellis in Boone County, West Virginia, will close on July 31, 2008, according to Curtis I. Taylor , chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the Division of Natural Resources. The area was initially leased by the state from Armco Steel Corporation in 1960.  Mining operations currently under permit will eliminate the only access road into the area.

“Current and former landowners are to be commended for allowing anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts to use the area for the past 48 years,” Taylor said.

Other public lands in close proximity to Fork Creek are Big Ugly WMA, Elk Creek WMA in Logan and Mingo counties, and Upper Mud River WMA in Lincoln County and Kanawha State Forest in Kanawha County.  Consult the state’s publication, “Wildlife Management Areas, A Guide to Facilities, Fish and Wildlife,” for more information.
