Many people consider Hawks Nest State Park in Fayette County to be one of the most scenic parks in the state. An open house is scheduled at Hawks Nest for Sunday, April 11, from Noon to 3 p.m. so that visitors can enjoy the natural beauty during one of the best times of the year and enjoy some special activities.
“Hawks Nest is known for the great scenic view from the overlook of the New River area and, perhaps more importantly, as a honeymoon site for countless couples starting out married life,” said Acting Superintendent John Bracken. “We’re a special place in West Virginia that people return to visit for a day trip, overnight stay or vacation.”
The open house will feature food samples and tasting of menu items served in Canyon Vista Restaurant at the park lodge. “It’s an opportunity to meet our food service concessionaire Tom Norman, and enjoy open house refreshments while touring our lodge rooms and registering to win prizes” said Bracken.
The park’s restaurant features buffets every Sunday from Noon until 3 p.m. Sunday buffet is $15.95 and, when restaurant guests present a church bulletin for Sunday, the per-person price is reduced by two dollars for up to four guests. Senior discounts are recognized.
Programmer and Park Naturalist Megan Hash will be conducting tie-dyed T-shirt workshops in the park’s conference room area. A materials fee of $2 covers T-shirt or bandana, supplies and instructions. The Ansted Volunteer Fire Department will have a fire truck and safety house on site. “We encourage our guests, especially children, to become safety minded not only at home, but while on vacation. Firefighters will be onsite to answer questions about fire safety,” Hash said.
“Our doors are open year-round for lodging, meeting areas, and dining, but during this open house we are inviting area residents and anyone that may not have visited the park recently to enjoy what we have to offer,” Bracken said.
Visitors may register to win prizes of tram tickets for summer of 2010, jet boat rides, dinner at Canyon Vista Restaurant and overnight stays.
