Tu-Endie-Wei (Point Pleasant Battlefield) State Park Offers Two October Commemorative Events

10/1/2009
Two special events relating to the Battle of Point Pleasant of Oct. 10, 1774, and the monument set at the site 100 years ago to commemorate the battle, are scheduled for this month, according to Doug Wiant, Park Ranger at Tu-Endie-Wei (Point Pleasant Battlefield) State Park. "There's been a little confusion about the dates for these great events and we want people to know there is something special but very different for each weekend,” Wiant said.

Battle Days at Point Pleasant Oct. 2 - 4

Battle Days at Point Pleasant is scheduled for Oct. 2 - 4 at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park according to Wiant. “This is an opportunity for visitors to learn about the battle fought on this soil in 1774.” Battle Days weekend is a commemoration and memorial of the Battle of Point Pleasant which occurred at the “point” between Virginia militia and the Shawnee Tribe led by Chief Cornstalk. Battle Days includes an art show at Fort Randolph Terrace, a lantern tour with historical re-enactors at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park on Friday night, and a Battle Days Parade on Saturday in downtown Point Pleasant. The Mansion House at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park will be open for tours from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A Colonial Tea is planned at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mansion.

Point Pleasant Battle Monument 100th Anniversary Interpretive Walk Oct. 10

The 100th anniversary of the construction of the Point Pleasant Battle Monument will be the subject of an interpretative walk Oct. 10, led by Park Ranger Doug Wiant, the last of several conducted in 2009. The Battle at Point Pleasant was recognized with the installation of a monument 100 years ago, Oct. 10, 1909 as a tribute to a battle fought on this same date in 1774.  To learn about the battle along the banks of the Ohio River and about history preserved at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, join Wiant for “A Battle Remembered: Point Pleasant Battle Monument 100th Anniversary Interpretive Walk.”  The program begins at 1 p.m. and attendees should meet at the front entrance of Tu-Endie-Wei State Park 15 minutes prior.  There is no charge.  For more information about the 'ranger walk,' phone 304-675-0869.

The museum at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is open from May through October, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  The state park is located in west central West Virginia. Point Pleasant lies one mile north of junction U.S. 35 and W.Va. 2 or at the intersection of W.Va. routes 62 and 2 in Mason County. The park itself is just west of this intersection at #1 Main St. Information is online at www.tu-endie-weistatepark.com.
