Two Bird Count Opportunities At Pipestem Resort State Park Feb. 15-18 And March 15

2/14/2008

Two bird count opportunities are coming up at Pipestem Resort State Park, and the public is invited to take part in either or both, according to park naturalist Jim Phillips, an avid birder who has participated in 36 bird counts himself.

"Many of our recreational activities have to be curtailed during the winter season because of the cold, but veteran birders look to winter as a time to renew acquaintances with species only seen during the winter months," Phillips explains. "It also is an ideal time for beginning birders to gather with older birders like me to enjoy our feathered friends."

The Great Backyard Bird Count -- February 15-18

"You can do this in your own yard or your favorite park and then go online and submit your results," Phillips says. Sponsored by the National Audubon Society, Cornell University of Ornithology and other organizations, this survey gives a snapshot of what birds are where and in approximate numbers across the entire country. For more information, go to www.birdsource.org/bggc. Phillips has scheduled multiple bird walks on this weekend at Pipestem Resort.  His activity schedule is posted to www.pipestemresort.com.

Pipestem Area Eagle Survey -- March 15, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Phillips and 31 other birders conducted the 3rd Annual Pipestem Area Eagle Survey on January 5. Of the 12 observation stations along 35 miles of the New River from Glen Lyn, Va. to Sandstone, W.Va., seven stations reported sighting of eagles during the day. This additional survey will focus on signs of resident birds and nesting indicators.  Observers include Ron and Wendy Perrone of Three Rivers Avian Center, the Bibbee Nature Club and others.  Results of the January 5 survey are posted on Pipestem's Web site www.pipestemresort.com under "recreation."

Pipestem Resort is located between Hinton and Athens on Route 20. Considered a resort park with golf, camping, cabins, restaurants and more, birders and outdoor enthusiasts recognize the park as an outdoor interpretative lab with the park's nature center and Phillips inviting guests and visitors to come and enjoy nature's wonders.
