Coal Heritage Trail Weekend: Oct. 10-12, Landgraff

The Coal Heritage Trail Weekend includes guided tours of the John Cooper House, site of the first coal operator in Southern West Virginia; visits to the Ashland, W.Va., company store and Coalwood, W.Va., birthplace of Homer Hickam; and a driving tour of the trail. The cost of the package is $675 per couple and includes dinners and two nights lodging. Apple Butter Festival: Oct. 18-19, Huntington

The first Huntington Homecoming Apple Butter Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19, at Harris Riverfront Park in downtown Huntington. Bridge Day: Oct. 18, New River Gorge

Bridge Day is West Virginia’s largest single-day event. Hundreds of BASE jumpers and more than 100,000 spectators are expected to attend the event. The 876 ft. tall New River Gorge Bridge serves as the launch point for six hours of legal BASE jumps. This is the only day of the year that traffic is shut down and spectators can safely and legally walk across the world's second longest single arch bridge. Free event. Helvetia Day: Oct. 18, Helvetia

Hinton Railroad Days & New River Train Excursions: Oct. 18-19, 25-26, Hinton

Also known by the locals as “Train Days,” the Hinton Railroad Days festival welcomes each afternoon the arrival of the New River Train. Railroad days include many different and unusual crafts, such as rings made from coins, wooden furniture, quilts, jewelry, driftwood creations, wooden oil lamps and much more. West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Family Concert Series: Oct. 18, Charleston

What better way to introduce children to the orchestra than through the music of Harry Potter? Bring the worlds of spells and symphony together as you and your kids experience the original music by John Williams from the hit Harry Potter movies. Maestro Grant Cooper will don his sorcerer’s hat and perform a little magic for everyone! Concert begins at 11 a.m. at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences. The West Virginia Turkey Festival honors the many turkey farmers in the Lost River Valley. Prickett’s Fort 18th Century Fall Rendezvous: Oct. 24-26, Fairmont

This fall rendezvous will take place on the grounds of Prickett’s Fort State Park. Encampment portraying the 18th century with period camp, dress and wares provides a rich history lesson. Quilter's Weekend at North Bend State Park: Oct. 24-26, Cairo
Join Marilyn Maher and Karen Harris for a weekend of quilting techniques. Classes include Quilters Stow and Go, Perfecting the Quilting Stitch and Embellishments. Second Annual Deckers Creek Adventure Day: Oct. 26, Morgantown

The Deckers Creek Adventure Day includes an Adventure Race and free community festival. The three hour Adventure Race will take place from 1- 4 p.m. at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park with fun for the whole family. Teams of three will compete in foot travel, biking, rappelling, canoeing and mystery challenges for the title of Adventure Day champions. Other activities include environmental education, live music, a costume contest and an awards ceremony. Race enthusiasts, families and costumes are welcome! Wetzel County Chili Fest: Oct. 25, New Martinsville

The day will start with a 5K/2K fun run/walk at 9 a.m. Activities and attractions include a car cruise, royalty contest, hot dog eating contest, hot pepper eating contest, auction, costume parade and activities for the kids, soccer tournament, live entertainment and arts and crafts.
