Hatfields and McCoys to open 2022 season in Beaver, West Virginia

10/24/2021

The famous “Hatfields and McCoys” historical drama will once again be performed at the Cliffside Amphitheatre this year. Theatre West Virginia will hold 12 performances for the 2022 summer season.
The long-running show is based on the feud between two families. The Hatfields of Mingo County, West Virginia and the McCoys of Pike County, Kentucky.
West Virginia writer Billy Edd Wheeler penned the drama and Nick Yurick will direct the play this season. Andy Woodruff will portray Devil Anse Hatfield for the 11th season. Theatre West Virginia GM Scott Hill said that the production has been going for nearly 50 years, making its debut in 1971.
Hill likened the story behind the play as a type of West Side Story or an Appalachian style story of Romeo and Juliet.  “It’s the same story, two families not getting along, the kids get together, that causes problems and mayhem,” said Hill.
