Jane Lew-based astronomy club hopes to educate community with observatory


JANE LEW, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia can be a great place to stargaze thanks to its mostly rural areas, high mountains and a relative lack of light pollution. The Central Appalachian Astronomy Club (CAAC) in Jane Lew has made sure to take advantage of this using its very own observatory.

Retired Clarksburg Fire Chief and President of the CAAC Joe Gonzalez has always had a love for astronomy. He told 12 News that more than 20 years ago, he decided to add an observatory to his backyard after he was inspired by a priest in Morgantown who taught astronomy from his own observatory.
“I remembered the dome, I was gonna try to get a silo from a farm and build my own,” Gonzalez said.
