Morgantown, West Virginia, based company creating product to aid bariatric surgeons

After noticing some challenges faced by doctors during gastrointestinal surgery, Morgantown-based start-up company Endolumik is currently developing a fluorescent-based product to aid bariatric surgeons — and their patients — during procedures.

Endolumik was founded in 2020 by Dr. Nova Szoka, a bariatric surgeon at Ruby Memorial Hospital who has performed over 1,000 bariatric surgeries, which aim to help those suffering from obesity lose weight by stapling the stomach and other methods.

However, during her years of practice, Szoka said she noticed the spacing calibration tubes — or “bougies” — that surgeons temporarily place in the stomach during surgery have been known to cause some issues, leading her to found Endolumik and become its chief medical officer.
