Not just a ‘fingerprint center’: FBI CJIS serves multifaceted role in combating crime, terrorism in U.S. and overseas

Twenty-five years ago when the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division opened in Clarksburg, West Virginia, it was called the “fingerprint center” by a lot of people — the place where the government stored images of fingerprints.

And a look at the numbers lends credence to why people were — and remain — quick to think fingerprints when they hear “CJIS.” According to the FBI’s 2019 annual report, CJIS holds 77,471,369 criminal fingerprints in its repository.
