Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in West Virginia for the last weeks of winter

As the final weeks of winter draw on, folks wishing to get out and take advantage of nicer days can still enjoy outdoor recreation.
Officials note that outdoor recreation has become more and more popular in recent years, even before the pandemic.
“In the couple of years preceding the pandemic, we had seen a great increase in interest in the outdoors. The pandemic really accelerated that,” said Chelsea Ruby, secretary of the West Virginia Department of Tourism.
“So anything in West Virginia related to the outdoors has become incredibly popular over the last year. Last year, skier visits were a 37% increase over the previous year. Hatfield and McCoy Trails permit sales were up 46%. Whitewater rafting was up 26%,” Ruby said.
