West Virginia’s end of Nucor deal ‘very well protected,’ says Economic Development secretary


West Virginia’s financial contributions to Nucor Corp.’s planned sheet steel mill in Mason County are “protected very well,” according to state officials involved with landing the project.
Although some economic development announcements of the past have failed to live up to expectations or have not come to fruition at all, the Nucor deal includes numerous safeguards designed to assure the largest private investment in state history lives up to its promise, said state Economic Development Secretary Mitch Carmichael.
“People want to construe this with China Energy or whatever, where there was an announcement and then nothing happened,” he said. “We were so careful to put in milestones in this transaction.”
