West Virginia Batman receives Distinguished West Virginian Award

7/1/2023

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — The West Virginia Batman received the highest honor a civilian in the Mountain State can receive Sunday.

The man behind the mask, John Buckland, goes to Expression Church in Huntington, and because the church is a crucial part of his story, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeff Sandy visited the 11 a.m. service to hand Buckland the Distinguished West Virginian Award.

Buckland said it wasn't his idea to start dressing up as Batman. It was God's.
"Sept. 4 of 2012, God woke me up in the middle of the night and told me to be Batman and that's what I've been doing ever since," Buckland said after accepting the award.
