‘Thank you, vets, and happy holidays': Red Cross, students and donors create gift bags for local military veterans

The American Red Cross is committed to supporting the men and women who serve in the United States military, and that commitment doesn't end when enlistments expire.

In Winchester, Virginia, recently, Red Cross employees and volunteers gathered in the nonprofit's office to fill 200 gift bags with donated toiletries, puzzle books, letters, greeting cards and more. The bags were to be delivered to former military members staying in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia, which is the healthcare facility used by many Winchester-area veterans.

"We've been overwhelmed with the generosity," a beaming Leslie Caliva, community volunteer leader for the Greater Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, said as she looked at about a dozen tables covered with donated items. "It's amazing, it really is."
